How do UV lights work in an Air Conditioner?

UV lights used in air conditioning systems work as a part of an air purification or disinfection process. Here’s how UV lights are commonly used in air conditioning systems:

UV lights are installed within the air conditioning system, typically near the evaporator coil or blower fan. As air passes through the system, the UV lights emit ultraviolet radiation, specifically UVC radiation.

The UVC radiation emitted by the UV lights works to destroy or inactivate microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and mold spores that may be present in the air or on the surfaces of the evaporator coil and surrounding components.

When exposed to UVC radiation, the DNA of microorganisms undergo structural changes, preventing their reproduction and rendering them unable to cause infections or spread diseases. The UVC radiation damages the genetic material, disrupting their cellular functions.

UV lights can also help reduce the formation of biofilms on the evaporator coil. Biofilms are slimy layers that can develop on surfaces due to the growth of microorganisms. By inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, UV lights help keep the coil cleaner and more efficient.

Additionally, UV lights in air conditioning systems are typically used in conjunction with other air filtration and purification methods to provide comprehensive air quality improvement.
